I enjoy a good shoe, as my closet will a test to, however my shoes are limited to a very specific colour palette. I have a good amount of red; beacoup black, lots of leopard print and barely any brown, in total I only have three pairs of brown shoes. Well, on Saturday, I went shopping with the very fashion foreword Stylespy to the San Marcus Premium Outlet Mall and I was coloured by her passion for all of the Pantones. I watched her shop for colours that are not in my spectrum and I found myself admiring her preference for all of the colours in the rainbow. Even as I began to be tempted by teal, awed by an aquamarine and pleased by a plum---- I knew these colours are not for me. I am and may always be a black and red girl and I am really okay and happy with that. Having a single colour story works for me for many reasons. In keeping true to red and black I am rewarded with having a wardrobe in which almost all my pieces work together. And, as my wardrobe is almost entirely red and black it makes sense that my shoes should be in keeping. Oui?
I shared with Stylespy that I am on the hunt for a shoe that I can wear while in Paris. And, this is not an easy task. I am looking for a shoe that I can walk in for about 11 miles a day and still look somewhat chic. If I was willing to go the Mephisto, Birkenstock or athletic shoe route it would be an easy goal to accomplish--but as I am not unwilling for my feet to be ugly Americans---my perfect Paris shoes may take me months to find. At this point Stylepsy and I had shopped a good five hours--my feet in their cute little, but not altogether comfy, Delman flats---had walked through Barney's, Neiman Marcus, Ferragamo, Kate Spade and other assorted stores. My little piggies had gone to market and they were feeling a little bit fried in the unsupportive yet stylish ballet flats.
Stylespy shared that her feet are very happy in a cute and comfy Stuart Weitzman ballet flat. Saks had this cute little wisp of a shoe in gold, black, silver and platinum. I tried them on hoping to feel like I could conquer all of Paris in them. Sadly, I still felt like I could use a chair and a stiff drink.

I tried on lots of cute flats that Saks had on sale. I found nail polish red Cole Haan heeled things that have the Nike air technology--so they may look like a sadistic sandal they in fact feel like I am wearing a pair of Nike walking shoes. I have very happy feet.
In an uncharacteristic act, I reached for a pair of Orchid Coach flats and when I tried them on the strangest things happened, my feet felt like I had stepped into little clouds of heaven and that little Coach angels massaged my feet into a reflexological bliss. My feet were ready to walk to Père-Lachaise and back to the Louvre and up to the top of the Eiffel Tower and then for a long stroll through the Tulleries and maybe even be up for dancing. I checked with Stylespy to see if hours of shopping had impaired my judgement and if these orchid shoes were in fact cute. She agreed that they were and she encouraged me to go ahead and get the same shoe in black.
I was giddy with delight. I had found shoes for Paris. And, I had added a little bit of colour, that wasn't red, to my closet. I do feel like the red shoes in my closet may not be open to another colour coming in. I talked to my red shoes, as you do, and I assured them not to be afraid. It is only one pair of non-red shoes and orchid is a red colour of sorts. It is not like that I bought a blue or a green shoe. Hmm, it might be fun to have a pair of green shoes.

I love those flats. I eye them a lot. Excellent choice! I also love the little bit of extra colour in the legacy stripe on the inside.
Bon choix!
I feel sure that after a little period of adjustment, your red shoes will come to accept your pink shoes, especially when they realize how happy they make your feet. And don't forget -- those shoes will be delightful with your black clothing, or a black/white combo. And my goodness, if you need a few outfits to go with the orchid shoes, well -- we'll just have to go shopping again, won't we?!
Those shoes are darling! I think you made a wise choice with both colors. Most of my wardrobe is black as well, with punches of red, pink, and coral, and I think it's nice to have the tiny bit of variation from red that both pink (orchid, in your case) and orange tones afford you. Makes you look more interesting, and your wardrobe more versatile.
I just bought some new "athletic" ballet flats to wear on our marathon up-and-down-hills trip to San Francisco in June. I can only hope that when they arrive they're as cute (in their own athletic way) as your Coach flats. Comfort and support are so important, yet so is not looking like a schmuck.
I must say, you've packed a lot of fun into your 2-3 weeks in Austin so far!
Amities,
Marsi
Even the most comfortable shoe can become a pain whilst walking in Paris. I suspect you'll have to buy more shoes...in Paris...you know, for the health of your feet. I'm just sayin'.
Ooh, those are cute! I'm not an Orchid kind of girl, but I'd go for those in green!
Kaili: They are so comfortable--I cannot even tell you. I am not usually a fan of a Coach product. I have another pair of their flats that are not great and I have a pair of their heels that were designed for a ballerina with the ability to stand on her toes. But, these are a winner and happily the black ones look really great with the BR black bag I bought this fall.
Amy: Well, I am not sure that the red shoes will be pleased to hear that I find another shoe more comfortable than them--but, they can rest assured that they will never be replaced. And, even though they may I have met the goal of finding the perfect walking shoe for Paris--that does not mean I will quit looking. Thanks for inspiring me to try an alternate colour!!
Marsi: It is helpful to hear from another red shoe lover that I have not gone awry by sticking my toe into a broader colour palette. Orchid is in the family of red--so I have not totally betrayed my long standing commitment to red.
You have well articulated my goal for a Paris shoe, "comfort and not looking like a shmuck"! Looking forward to hearing more about your ballet flat/athletic shoe.
And, yes, there has been a good amount of fun and I feel sure that the fun has only begun. My fears about Austin were all ill founded. It is a great city. Hope you visit some time.
Colleen: It is so nice to have a dear friend who cleverly enables my addiction. Yes, there will need to be shoes in Paris. It is bad for the feet to wear the same shoes everyday and even though I got them in two colours I will need an entirely totally different shoe to switch off with. ;-)
Deja Pseu: I am not an Orchid girl, either. I don't know who I am becoming in this city. I am a little scared. But, I am going with it. And, you are so right, these shoes would be adorable in a Kelly green. :-)
Ooohh... I love both of these and have utter faith that the orchid look fabulous on you. Great finds! I realize I need to get myself in gear to prepare for Paris, now! Can't wait to see these in person! :)
Those pink Coach flats are gorgeous. I NEED them.
You should definitely try some green shoes too (although you wouldn't be able to wear them with your red clothes for fear of looking like Christmas)... I have flat bright green sandals from Faith (British high street store), pale green wedges from Camper, and dark green patent leather heels from Hobbs, a great shoe store in London. I am very fond of all three pairs, but there is more love left in my heart for green shoes and I feel I need to get some more green babies.
B: Too bad we don't wear the same shoe size--that would double our Paris shoe collection. Perhaps we can find you a Paris shoe/boot while you are here.
Gervy: I am seeing the wisdom of your ways. Yes, green is a great shoe colour for the ENFJ red-heads who love the "Bachelor." Tonight I am going to do some on-line green shoe shopping. My red shoes are not going to be happy about this. ;-)
Ballerinas are perfect for Paris..
CarolG: That will be me doing pirouettes across the Pont Neuf. As cute as these are, I think I still need some red Repetto's from Paris.
wow!!
I love your "pink" flats, they're great. And I'm so glad that you let another colour enters into your life :)
But I think you should make a bigger step a buy those green ones, you would learn to love them ;)
You're right Port wine is great, but one must choose it right, have you ever tried a 20 years old one?? Delicious.
xoxo
I love the orchid flats! And how fun to go shopping with Stylespy! I found her blog through yours and love reading her fashion posts, etc...it would be more than fun to go shopping with the two of you and having lunch that included cocktails! BTW, I did check out the Laura Bennett dress designs and I like them all, except for the low cut of several of them, that would hard to pull off in the day in Tacoma! :-)
Seeker: You are another one whose colourful palette has rubbed off on me. Thanks for that!! I am definitely in the market for a green shoe and maybe a yellow one. Just call me rainbow weasel!
And, I have had 20 year old port. We actually drank port quite often when we lived in CHicago. It is the perfect warming up wine. Muy sobarosa!!( That is probably not how you say it in Portuguese--but you get the idea. ;-)
Kelly: We certainly both have our black belts in shopping. I bet you do too! We saved the cocktails for after the shopping. I have learned my lesson!!
Yeah, that super deep-v is classic Laura--but is not for me either. I bet it would look great on her. And, I am not sure even she would wear that as a day dress.
You're going to be so chic in Paris -- I've been wondering about that Cole Haan line with the Nike Air technology. You'll have to report back if you take them out for a spin -- very impressive if a sassy red sandal like those are also comfortable for putting in the miles. And I love those little flats -- great choices.
Materfamilias: I am hoping for chic and not for shlumpa-lumpa. I have two pairs of the Cole Haan/Nike Boots that I love--they are the most comfortable high heeled boots I have ever had.
But, I will probably not take the red Cole Haan's with me--as I never do well in the cobble stone streets with a heel. There was a very bad incident with a coach heel in the 7th arrondisment. I was in so much pain that He-weasel offered to carry me. I declined and instead walked barefoot back to our hotel. There were blisters for our entire trip. Never again!!!
I feel confident the Coach flats will hold up to the worst Paris has to offer--I will climb Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe--and still be blister free. Anyways, that is the plan. :-)
Ooh la la. And nice of your red shoes to be understanding. I mean, can't we all just get along??
I pretty much stick to the basic colors but those flats in green would sure work for me.
I absolutely adore your Coach flats!!!
WendyB: Red shoes are trying to grow and expand--but change can be hard.;-)
POP: I really wish they came in green. I would have ordered them already.
Lynn: Merci!
i gotta admit the coach flats are cute
Oh my. Those Coach shoes are divine!
