Talk Amongst Your Selves. Topic: Random Things I am Looking For

Today I turn to you, wise reader, for guidance on the following topics:

1. Please suggest a good eye makeup remover for me. I have tried so many and I still wake up looking like one part Baby Jane and one part puffy eyed raccoon. Please, I need suggestions. Keep in mind, I have very sensitive eyes. And, I say no to Cetaphil cleanser and Lancome eye makeup remover.

2. And, I need a curling iron. I really want one. I want one so bad that I almost went to CVS at 11:00 at night to get one. I would rather not spend a fortune as I am going to have to get another one when I get to France. One feature I absolutely have to have is automatic shut off. I have this very specialized kind of O.C.D. about curling irons, flat irons, and hot curlers. Here is how it works. I use one of the following items. I then unplug the item. Then I leave the house and get about 40 miles away from the house and then I start obsessing that I did not turn of the curling iron. I then drive home to find that it was unplugged. Never have I come home to find that I have left it on. This has happened so frequently, that now when I turn it off I make a point of going and telling He-weasel that I turned it off so I have someone to ask when I start worrying that I didn't do it.

3. Ideas on what I should wear for the Greek Festival in Houston tomorrow. Two things to remember. 1) It is going to be really hot. 2) Greek gals dress very cute.

4. Do you know anyone at the Civil Records office in Samos, Greece? And, if so, could they send me a copy of my grandfather's certificate of residence? If not Samos, anyone work at the Sparta hall of records? No, I didn't think so.

5. What should I make for dinner? Keep in mind that I am pre-menstrual and feeling a little lazy. And, all I have in my refrigerator is wine, peanut butter, milk, baking soda and Nutella.

6. Rhode Island. It is neither a road or an island; discuss.

I had tried many different eye makeup removers and never liked any, until I found Gentle Eye Makeup Remover by Rimmel. Best part? It's cheap too! It's very gentle and doesn't leave a greasy feeling on your skin after you've used it, and isn't drying either.

I have used the Almay makeup remover pads, both the oily version and the non-oily version.

#1 I like Liz Earle, very soothing. Those French pharmacies have loads of stuff to experiment with so you may want to hold off until then.
#5 If you drink enough wine you can 'forget' to cook. Nutella and a spoon is good!
#6 is it not a chicken? if so dinner is sorted.

1. I detest eye makeup remover. leaves your eye area all oily. I use a bit of my moisturizer (non-greasy). does the trick. 2. curling irons are so 80s. 3. Something crisp and white. All white. lots of jangly jewelry. 4. nerp. 5. I'm what's in between pre and post so kind of DISTRACTED, 'kay? How about a peanutella smoothie? 6. You need a vacation.

lbr - #1...can't help you, don't wear eye makeup, maybe a little mascara now and then but I wash my face at night and it comes off. #2...curling iron...can't help you there either, don't use one and haven't in a long time. #3 - agree with something white - flowing shirt, sleeveless shirt. #4...nope #5..get take-out!

the jar of nutella would do quite nicely for dinner if it were me. if you had bananas, then you can justifiably claim to have eaten a balanced meal.

Paula said...

Hummm. not sure about the eye maker or the curling iron, but being Greek I have lots of experience with Greek festivals! I agree something white (perhaps capris) and be prepared to eat lots of food, watch dancing, and see a vast array of Greek trinkets (most of which are original or one of a kind). :) EnjoY!!!!

P.S. On lazy days pizza is always a good choice for dinner (or wings)

wine and nutella, mmmm, what's not to like? and maybe get he-weasel to grab a loaf of bread and a few bananas on the way home to round it out.
That dress that supposedly didn't "favour" you -- white, summery, festivaly -- or your new ever-so-flattering dress? not Greek enough?
I need to borrow some of your OCD-ness around turning off hair appliances (Not that I don't do OCD myself, but not effectively) and apply it to the pots of boiling water I leave to their own devices in order to check my e-mail (then check my bloglines, then comment at a few site, then, yikeS! what's that smell!) -- at least I'm still home while I'm burning down the house.

ps i use cerave cleanser to remove eyeliner when i've been experimenting. it's not too different from cetaphil though, so you may protest. the shu uemura oil cleansers work pretty decently too. oh, and i've been satisfied with these wipes that mac sells... jeeze, i've tried more than my fair share of makeup removers for someone who wears eyeliner once in a blue moon - though actually i'm on like day 5 of my effort to use it more (and i've used cerave all week).

This wont ne in order of your list, I'm feeling old tonite, so here goes...

I like Christian Dior Demaquillant Instant Eye make-up remover, the one in clear bottle and pink screw cap - it's damn good, so is MAC's remover and wipes, and I like Pond's cold cream too. But I wash off with cleanser no matter what and apply eye cream and moisturizer later.

I use hot rollers or blow my hair, curlers only at the Salon operated by my Roger hehe..

Long flowing skirt and sexy tank, preferably in white and gladiator sandals.

Eat out.

Nutella is dessert for me, and I store it in the pantry coz I like it gooey, yum...

Run Around Paris said...

1. You should really try MAC eye makeup remover...just a few light swipes of the cotton ball and your makeup is gone. No tugging or rubbing necessary to do the trick.
2. I have curly hair that constantly needs to be tamed. I use a Hot Tools curling iron (at the suggestion of my stylist) - they can be found at beauty supply stores and Trade Secret - probably a million other places too. I also use a Chi flatiron - it's so hot and so fast.
3. Damn...I forgot the other questions...I'll be back...hahaha!

Fuji Mama: Thank you so much for visiting my blog! So nice to have you here. Ohh, Rimmel!! I have never tried that before. Thank you!It is going on my list. Have you done any reviews of Japanese cosmetics on your blog? I am off to find out.:-)

WendyB: Really, I have never tried them. Which do you like better?

Indigo16: I know, I should wait until I get to France. But I am tired of waking up with black rings around my eyes.
And, I like your approach to dinner. You are wise. But, no chicken. That is too much work unless we can buy it pre-cooked at the store.

JNRR: 1) I think I use more eye makeup than you do. 2)And, hey, how do you think all the celebs get their natural curls? From a curling iron and a celebrity hairdresser who knows how to use a curling iron so they don't look like they are from the 80's. My results may vary.;-) 3) White is good. And, I have good Greeky looking jewelry.
4)Too bad. 5) Ooh, that sounds good. 6) You're right.;-)

Alisa: Okay, white seems to be the popular choice. And, I like the way you think. Take out! Yes, but what kind? Hmmm...

Anonymous: Hmm, I think I know who you are. Anyways, yes, bananas and Nutella are a whole and nutritious meal---in the same way rice and beans make a whole protein.;-)

Paula: You are Greek?!! Thanks for the tips on what to wear and what to eat. It is kind of sad when you can't figure out those basic things for yourself. Happily I have you all to help me!!!:-) But, you have no relatives in Sparta or Samos, huh? ;-)
I am so happy you visited my blog. Thank you for commenting. And, I really hope you visit again soon.:-)

Materfamilias: The Target dress would be good. But, I haven't yet bought it. I do have a pair of white Michael Kors pants. I think I might wear that with the Giraffe tunic I got a few months ago. Maybe some jeweled sandals and a little Greek coined bling.

Oh, Materfamilias, I wish I could give you my electrical OCD. It is not a trait I enjoy. We have had to come back after an hour drive in bumper to bumper traffic to check and see if I had unplugged my flat iron. It was not a good day. He-weasel was not happy.
What you need is a whistling tea pot! Or a timer. LOL! @ "at least I am home while the house is burning down."

F.O.T.: Well, to get technical, the Nutella is on top of the refrigerator.

Up and Down Town: F.O.T. make me laugh out loud all of the time.
Hey, and good job with the eyeliner. I am off to look at your blog and see if I can see the eyeliner in your drawings.;-)
And, I have never before heard of Cerave cleanser. I am intrigued....

Run Around Paris said...

OK, it didn't really matter - I am in Ohio and we don't think in terms of warm weather clothes. Well, I should clarify - it's either minus 30 here with the windchill, or 90+ in the summer. Don't forget the humidity - always. Target and Kohl's both have some cute dresses out though.
And dinner...hmmm, maybe just take-out since you're feeling kinda icky. Have a great weekend!

La Belette Rouge said...

Randal: Nope, well, I suppose that the hunt for Greek citizenhip documents is a marathon. And, I do look like a football player with black under my eyes when I wake up in the a.m. Is that enough sport for you?

Run Around Paris: Ooh, I am hopeful. I use the MAC makeup remover swipes for when I travel and those are good. But, I have never tried the eye makeup remover.
And, I am delighted by your recommendation for a curling iron. Yes! I hope that Ulta carries Hot Tools. I use the Hai Ceramic flat iron and I love-love-love it. But, I do wish it had an automatic off.

Please do come back! I look forward to your answers.;-)
p.s. Do you use any heat protecting product before you use the curling iron?

Lynn: I knew you would have great recommendations!! I am putting all of your eye makeup removers on my lemming list.

I do have a long flowy skirt and a sexy tank. I have been anti-gladiator sandal--but this is the perfect time for them. Dang!!
Why did I avoid this trend?

Dinner will either be take out or go out. I love how none of you suggested any cooking. You are sooo my people. Love you!!!xoxo

the best makeup remover: use the oil cleansing method. In summary, mix 50/50 castor oil and olive oil and use on face (a massage). Castor oil takes it all off. You can do some research on the oil cleansing method to see how it works.

For Almay, I prefer the oily version because you need that for the Long Lasting Lust MAC lip color! But the non-oily is good for just eye makeup. Also, it's much easier to travel with the pads than with something sloshing in a bottle. Speaking of MAC, I got the same product in a rose color and I'm not loving the color or texture. It seems different from the red, texture-wise. Darn.

La Belette Rouge said...

WendyB: Thank you!! I think that I am going to try the oily version so I can use it for eyes and for the MAC colour stay. I am sorry to hear that the rose isn't as good as our lasting lust. I love the lasting lust and I thank you every time I put it on.

my aunt has always used natural products to remove makeup and firm up her skin. we used to laugh at her "fruit salad" cosmetics... until we realized the other day, she turned 80 -- and looks 60! i'm turning 50 and look... well, not 80, but sure as hell not as good for my age as my aunt.

she always used warm milk and a bit of olive oil to remove her eye makeup. she used honey and egg white to tighten up the area around the eyes, and olive oil and egg yolk for the rest of her face. in keeping with your 'greek thing' going on, you should have olive oil in the house.

definitely white to the greek festival, with perhaps a mediterranean blue scarf around your hair (or, with your red locks, perhaps something daring in orange or green) to protect your scalp from the sun.

what should you make for dinner? reservations (bah-bum-dum!)

La Belette Rouge said...

Bonnie-Ann: When I hear stories like this I always worry that is genetics that gave her the great results( she had a different mother or father than you --and maybe it was that that gave her amazing skin). But, I so want it to be the "fruit salad" cosmetics that did it.
I saw a sales lady the other day who was easily in her late 70's--but her skin looked like she was 16 and I am certain there has been no lasers or any other interventions. I asked her what she had used to give her the screen. Her answer, "same as you, I just wash my face, put on some moisturizer and stay out of the sun." No, that is not why she looks that great. It was because she won the genetic lottery. ;-)

And, hey, I just got a new Agean blue scarf. I am so wearing it tomorrow. Thanks!!

Reservations. Hmm, I might be too lazy for that. But, I am not too lazy for husband to go and pick up food. ;-)

Okay, my responses. Try not to get veklempt on me as you read these. Oye!

1. Cetaphil was going to be my recommendation. It works the best for me. So, I've sadly got nothing for you on this one.

2. Hmph. I too would like a curling iron but sadly, I have a curling disorder. I cannot curl my hair. I always manage to crimp and fry my hair but not curl it. What is wrong with me? Where do I begin. But I too do the same thing regarding unplugging these devices.

3. I say wear your lovely vibrant Target dress to the Greek Festival!

4. Ugh. Sadly, again... I've got nothing for you here. :(

5. Cupcakes and queso washed down with some Jack? Yum. Or how about thai salad rolls as a very distant second alternative?

6. I'd like to visit Rhode Island sometime. That's all I've got to say about that.

Cheers, mon amie!

La Belette Rouge said...

It is 7 p.m. here in Texas and we still haven't decided what we are eating. I want Indian. He-weasel wants meat. But, I love your suggestion of queso, cupcakes and Thai salad wraps.

Think I am going to save Indian dress for more fancy event. Maybe for an evening out in Paris;-)

Hi there! Try the lemon cleanser from Ann Webb. I use it to take off all eye makeup and face makeup. It's very gentle. They may have it at Whole Foods there.

Now, we went to the Greek Festival tonight and you don't need to worry about the well dressed Greek girls. I didn't see any. The ones that were on stage dancing looked were probably 13 but looked 90 in those outfits.

If I see a red-headed weasel tomorrow, I will be the one running up to you squealing with delight but probably won't ask for your autograph. Don't miss out on the skewered meat in a pita!

:)

La Belette Rouge said...

Closet Therapist: Will all the commotion that has been going on here I haven't had a chance to get in for a facial. But, I will add this to my list of "must-trys."

Ooh, you went tonight. Did you have fun? You must have or you wouldn't be going back for tomorrow. Hope to see you there!!! Yum, the skewered meat in a pita sounds good. Was there tziki sauce?

La Framéricaine said...

Garden of Life Coconut Oil, hands down! You can take off your eye make -up with it, cook with it, eat a tablespoon per day, and it smells like heaven.

And at about $15 for a big jar, lasts forever and costs virtually nothing!

I am totally serious! I have a jar in my bathroom and in my kitchen at this very moment.

Of course, for OCD & curling I would recommend cutting...all...your...hair...off...until...it ...is...no...longer...an...option...to...curl. Radical? But, oh, so Jean Seberg.

Toga, but girly.

I never know what to have for dinner so I burden Le Framéricain with it. He's French and they were actually raised to care. I always say, "What can you expect from a girl raised on food out of red and white labeled cans?" Save your appetite for the Greek Festival, you'll thank me later.

Can only give 1 solution.
You could become OTT (over the top) and take the curling iron where 'ere you go.
That way you could be certain it's turned off.

THat's a good solution on the curling iron. I'd probably take the darn thing with me to be really sure. ;)

My fave E.M.R. is the Almay, the non-oily one. I love this stuff because it comes in a bottle and you can use your own cotton balls, and they also make pre-moistened pads that you can slip into a tiny zip-lock bag and use when you travel -- brilliant. I don't like oil-based removers because I feel like they leave a film over my eyes, but I will say that the Almay oil one is the only thing I've found that will take off one of those long-wearing lip colors. So that's good.

StyleSpy said...

PS... Curling iron? BWAH-HAH-HAH-HAH!!! Sorry, can't help you there...

1. I use Nivea Visage eyemakeup remover. It's not 100% perfect but, importantly to me given I use so much of it, cheap.
2. I have never used a curling iron myself, but everyone I know here swears by their GHD. http://www.ghdhair.com/us/
Not cheap, at $295 - but it has universal voltage! So funny (in a sad way, of course), about your curling-iron form of OCD - I think almost everyone must suffer from some specific form of OCD. I worry I've left the door unlocked.
3. Sorry, left it too late. But... a red dress?
4. No
5. He-Weasel needs to be sent out to do the shopping!
6. Wikipedia says Rhode Island is actually the official name for Aquidneck Island, with Providence Plantations being the mainland... hence, I am as clear as mud on why either/both are called Rhode Island. Crazy Americans!

Hello,

I like the Rimmel that was mentioned in another post, and also give the target brand makeup remover wipes (camomille) a try. They are really good at removing mascara, and they do not upset my skin. I am quite allergic. Good luck with your move to France!

La Framéricaine: I used to mix 1 T. of coconut oil in my coffee until I got tired of the taste.
You have a gorgeous skin. You make me want to reconsider the whole coconut thing.

No, I cannot singe off my hair with the curling iron. I cannot get away with Jean Seberg hair cut. I have a big head and a round face. But, it looks so great on you. You really should get the award for the most creative use of curling iron.

And, you were so right. I shouldn't have eaten on Friday night. The food was so good at the Greek festival.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog. And, congrats again on your citizenship!! Celebrate, you lucky ducky!:-)

CarolG: That is a really great solution. Seriously. What I do now when He-weasel isn't home is that I take it out of the bathroom and put it in the kitchen. The relocation of moving the iron is often enough to convince me that I have really turned it off.

FreidaB: I am not sure how I didn't come up with this before. It is brilliant.

Stylespy: I think I am going to live on the edge an try the oil free and the non-oil.
Hey, lucky you, you don't need a curling iron. But, there are those of us who were not born with a full head of curly hair.:-)

Seeker: Thanks for the suggestions. I've never heard of Diadermine. I love learning about a brand I have yet to explore.
More hugs and love to you. xoxo

Gervy: Ooh! I am happy to hear that the Nivea is good. I think I gave that to a friend in a care package. I hope it is that one.

Your curling iron suggestion is one that has got me lemming in a big way. I love that it has universal voltage.

And, happily He-weasel has taken on the task of shopping. Tomorrow morning we will once again have food.

Thank you for taking on the task of actually discussing Rhode Island. I learned a lot from you. :-)

Amanda: Thank you so much for visiting my blog and your comment. I am so delighted to learn about the Target brand. I have very sensitive and highly allergic skin, especially under my eyes. It is great to get a recommendation from someone else who has allergies and sensitivities.
And, thanks for the well wishes.
I hope you come back and visit very soon.:-)

OMG! I actally have something to say that is cosmetic-related!

I have used the humble Vaseline Petroleum Jelly (just called Vaseline in French, which sounds a little nicer) as eye make-up remover for a long, long time. It doesn't sting, is cheap, and moisturizes too.

I know it isn't very glamorous, but it works!

Hi, I'll only provide a brief answer for #6 since it's where I lived for my first 15 years in the US. It's actually called the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It was the first state to declare against the British during the Revolutionary War and was the last of the original 13 to join the new union. As you may infer, it's a place for individualists. The first story I wrote and drew this year was a RI one that you can read here if you want. Best wishes et merci pou votre visite.

Dessert: Greek Flag: Parfait of vanilla ice cream drizzled with blue curaco.

What to wear: White on at least half and involve cleavage.

Betty C: Ooh, never tried the Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on my eyes. It makes sense. You've got to love a product that is a multi-tasker. Great suggestion. Merci!

Susan: I am so delighted that for your first visit to my blog I have a topic that is near and dear to your heart. Thank you for your informative contribution and link to your gorgeous blog. I like the Neutrogena eye makeup remover and have been using it lately...I get it at Walgreens for like $5.99. There are a few others I've tried like Mary Kay and Clinique but they bother my eyes or make them puff up.

That puff pastry comes filled with spinach/feta (mini spanakopitas) or tomato/olive/feta or shrimp.

My test lab in Paris has 2 leading contenders for best eye make-up remover: Cils Demasq by Gemey-Maybelline and Talika eau douce démaquillante yeux hypersensibles. I haven't had a chance to test whether the Talika works with the BB gel eyeliner as my darling Chiclette borrowed it and then left her make-up kit at a friend's. So stay tuned for that update. Our lab has very exacting standards for eye make-up removers: must not leave a greasy film on the eyes, must work with contact lenses/sensitive eyes, must not require extreme rubbing, and must not result in racoon eyes. I should send these samples to the States for further testing. Care to be a fellow lab rat?

Regarding dinner, soon you will be in the land of Picard, the frozen food stores, where a quick and tasty dinner is only minutes away. Forget the myth of French working women coming home and whipping up 4-course meals every night of the week. Everyone I know goes to Picard. Having one right on my street was a major selling point for me. While I love to cook, some nights there's too much going on. Tonight for example we had sole limande and pommes noisettes (both from Picard) plus a salad. Yet another reason to move here! ;-)

And, as soon as you test the Talika, please post your results. I am very impressed with your strict lab requirements. These are my requirements that I have yet to fulfill.

Picard? Ooh, I have never heard about this place before. I am totally tempted and intrigued. Sole limande and pommes noisettes! Yummy!!! Set two more places at the table. We will be right over.;-) And, we'll bring the wine and Nutella.

Sez: Lime blossom cleanser. Strangely, that sounds like a cocktail to me. I think that means I need a cocktail.;-)
I have never heard of Elemis before. I always love to learn about a new luxe brand. Merci, Sez!

I think the Neutrogena eye make remover has a bit of a scent to it, I just sniffed it..it says 'oil free' on the front. It works well for me, but I know what it's like to get ones that don't and have my eyes swell up and puff and react....
It's been hot here so Tank has been sleeping more..thank God for small favors! :-)

PS sending M. Inkey a hello from the labs!
