1. I got my haircut and coloured yesterday and it looks AMAZING. The black is gone, the brown is gone and even the white is gone. Once again my hair is red. April, my new hair angel, even gave me an amazing haircut. She sliced long layers into my long hair and added body and movement and even upped my sexy. He-weasel was unable to resist my sexy powers when he saw me. It is amazing what a side swept bang can do for a girls self-esteem. Thanks O2BFrench for the recommendation! The Garden Party and Other Stories by Katherine Mansfield The Chosen by Chaim Potok Sloan also counts Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami and Birds of America by Lorrie Moore as two of her favorites---but I have already read them and loved them. I would read them again but my books are locked up in storage. 9. Going to see Rachel Getting Married. Looks like my kind of movie. 10. That I have 9 things I am happy about.
2. I have an appointment this morning with some doctor who is going to give me a prescription and soon my serotonin levels will change and I will no longer have breakdowns in my car. I am looking forward to that.
3. Finally, I am going to go to the new Los Angles County Museum of Art. I cannot believe I have been in SoCal so long and have seen no art. I feel sure this field trip will be good for me.
They have a show of Vanity Fair Portraits which should be fun.
4. He-weasel is not working this weekend, and that is why #3 can happen.
5. I saw the cutest thing ever on What Possessed Me and I feel compelled to share it with you. Go ahead and try and tell me that it is not the cutest thing you have ever seen.
6. I found that at J Crew this weekend they are having a secret sale of 20-50% off of of their sale merchandise. I also discovered this: "If you schedule an appointment with a J.Crew personal shopper by Monday, October 13, 2008, you can receive 20% off all the (regular priced) items you purchase in addition to receiving style advice. There is a $175 merchandise minimum in order to take advantage of the 20% off. (The minimum threshold has increased from the last personal shoppers offer, which had a $100 minimum.)" Thanks J Crew Aficionado!
7. I was going to go to a lecture on Art, Birth and Rebirth but then realized that the Wellbutrin will not have yet had a chance to kick in and that all that talk about birth might not be a wise.
8. I have a list of books from an article in which Sloan Crolsey, the author of "I Was Told There'd Be Cake" lists her favorite books:
Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion
On the Edge of Reason by Miroslav Krleza

Yay for happy things! I highly recommend all books by Chaim Potok. I started reading his work back in college.
I think you would really like, "Davita's Harp" and "My name is Asher Lev".
Sparkly happy things to you today!
You are on the mend! Welcome back!

Marsi
Kristen: Yes, indeed, yay for happy things! Thanks for the book recommendations. I don't know how I missed out on Chaim. I love discovering writers that I have yet to fall in love with. I am adding your books to my list.
And, Ms. Kristen, happy sparkly things to you.
xo
Marsi: I am a bit in the fake it til you make it mode. But, that has been a strategy that has worked well in my life.
Hope you have a lovely weekend.
xo
I'm so thrilled for you that the hair situation is under control!
Wendy: I was so scared to try someone new and risk my hair getting worse that I drove all the way there and then I seriously thought about leaving. Then I decided I would meet her and if I was at all freaked out I would leave. I am so relieved that she is a hair angel!
xo
I've heard that sexy is sexy, so good job on #1.
They have art in Southern California?
As for #5, I think it would be safe to go if you bring a pail full of tomatoes. You can practice your fastball, off-speed, the slider.
Oh, and make sure that #3 doesn't take too much time in #4 away from #1.
Can I put the karma off until next weekend? I have to work on my présentation orale for class. Yikes!
There is no feeling like the post-great -hair-cut&color-high. I wish it could be bottled! Congratulations on finding a good new stylist!
Everyone should have a hair angel -- so happy you found yours!
and yes, that photo is toooo cute -- and that is a very tiny teddy bear.
I'm going to have to get you to send me a book list once I've finished my MA - its all fabrication and text books for me at the moment.
V cute pic and sorry just catching up on all your fab posts, has been a busy week!! Have a great weekend xx
Yay for happy things! And double yah for beautiful sexy red hair and fabulous new cut! Many more happy things today I hope that soon the tears will be calmed.
I love Norwegian Wood and Birds of America so I have to go check out some of those other recommendations.
Randal:Well, the karma should arrive just in time for your orals. Bon chance, mon ami!
Hey there, Mr.,about the art. We have good art here. We have MOCA,LACMA,Getty and other museums with abbreviations that elude me. To be really honest, I prefer LA art museums to the Chicago Art Institute. There is something too stuffy and snooty about it for my taste. I like my museums to be open to Steve Martin roller skating in them.;-)
Fashion Herald: Seriously! I was so happy I could have kissed her. I tried to tone down my enthusiasm and just hugged her instead. I cannot stop looking at my hair.
My He-weasel said with actual shock,"It is all the same kind of colour from top to bottom! Amazing!" He is right---it is amazing.
Mater: Isn't that cute? I may actually print it. It is very hard to feel bad and look at that picture.
Good hair is very good. I am so happy to have my bad hair behind me.
Make do: I will happily send you a reading list upon your graduation. Until then I will be reading your lovely blog and look forward to learning vicariously through your experience. I am so excited for you. Grad school is so much fun, sure there is hard work, but also so lovely to focus so intently on your favorite subject. Hooray, you!
No apology necessary. Just delighted to see you! Have a lovely weekend.xo
Oh YES, ma belle, I feel the same about hair. There's nothing like a good dye and cut to make us feel up. I do it many times (That's why my hair is always short short ;) )
So HURRAY for such happy things!!
Great that you're spending quality time with He-weasel and you're going to the Museum.
OMG what can I say that's the cutest thing. Maybe you should get one, they shouldn't give much work..... (but I think they bite...)LOL
Hope you'll have a great weekend dear!!!!
Keep smiling and see the colours of Fall.
Love
xoxo
So glad you found a new hair angel! Hooray for the Return of Red! Isn't the Japanese art exhibit at LACMA also right now? Between that and the Vanity Fair portraits I think I need to schedule a visit soon!
Slouching Toward Bethlehem is a favorite of mine. I love a good collection of essays; "High Tide in Tuscon" by Barbara Kingsolver is right up there too.
Mardel: Thank you! I haven't cried in a whole 36 hours. Good,huh?:-)
Murakami is one of my favorite authors. And, when I was studying writing I had do many teachers recommend Birds of America. They were right. It is a fantastic read. I love having a long list of books I am excited to read.
Have a lovely weekend, Mardel!xo
Seeker: It is so funny, just as my hair is the longest I have ever had it I am so envious of everyone who can do short hair. I simply cannot do short hair. But, I LOVE yours!!
I am thrilled to have some quality time with my weasel--especially when that time includes art.
I have never had a rodent for a pet. It might be fun. They are awfully cute. But, I do not enjoy being bit.
Hope you have a fantastic weekend and that you are feeling a bit better too.
xo
The picture of the mouse is the cutest!
So glad you are feeling a bit better and have some happy things starting to creep back into your life. Enjoy your fun filled weekend! :)
It seems like you will be busy reading for a few weeks.
it's good to hear that you're gaining energy and happiness at the same time. I can really feel the positive energy reading this list. :)
happy shopping too!
Deja: I am so happy to be a redhead again. Seriously, when I looked in the mirror I didn't recognize myself. It is just wrong to have hair that is black, brown, red, copper and white.
I am so excited to see the new LACMA building. I am more excited about that than the art. My art tastes are more MOCA than LACMA, but I love architecture so I HAVE to see the building.
I love essays too. I cannot wait to read the Didion collection. The Year of Magical Thinking was heartbreakingly beautiful. I read Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle". I have not read "High tide in Tuscon." I am adding it to my list. Thanks!
Paula: I know! I love that mouse. I want that mouse. C-U-T-E!!!!
I actually am feeling better and sort of wonder if the MD will prescribe something for me. I hope he/she will.
Hope you have a happy and fun filled weekend, too!
Songy: I am a quick reader. Well, as I don't work or have kids or do a lot of housework---it is nothing for me to read two books on a lazy day. I actually have to force myself to read more slowly so as to savor a great book.
Thanks for feeling the good energy. All of the kind comments, good vibes and support has really helped. Thank you, Songy!
Jcrew shopping is always happy for me.
Have a lovely weekend!!
just another list of fabulous things from you. so amazing of you. wanted to write something about highlights of my life for the last month, but i couldn't even start it. =[
So glad you have your hair back! Also glad you are going to the doctor. I think it's making the decision to make the appointment that is the most difficult. Enjoy the art, and your weekend
Autumn: I am a list addict; I know! I told you, I would make a list for you. Just send me an email of what is going on and I will turn it into a list for you.;-)
Julianne:Me too!! That was some serious hair trauma. I am just about to leave for the MD. I am a little nervous. Worst case scenario I will get a blog post out of it.
Hope you have a lovely weekend!
This is all GREAT news, esp. the meds and hair color. I am light brown naturally, and dyed blond right now, and I have always dreamt of going RED! Post a pic!!
xoxox,
CC
That is so cute. How adorable, a mouse hugging a teeny, tiny stuffed bear. :)
Thanks for your comment in my blog, dear. I too love Sabrina's return in that dress!
xo/ fashion chalet
La Belette, glad to hear your hair nightmare is over! A great cut and color can do wonders for self-esteem. I hope your seratonin levels are back to normal in no time.
As for the book recommendations, I LOVE Joan Didion, and highly recommend Slouching Towards Bethlehem, and I read The Chosen back in college and really enjoyed that too. Haven't read the others, but I'll have to check them out.
I am delighted to hear all this! And that life has offered you bright moments. There will be more.
Yay for haircuts, art, mice, and shopping!
If you want something else to make you smile, try this poem. I read it yesterday and kept smiling after I thought about it!
http://www.poetrymagazine.org/magazine/0708/poem_181701.html
CC:Just back from md and they said I didn't have an appt. Grrr!!! I threw a fit and they are fitting me in at 2:30. I will prevail!!
I had one stylist tell me that redheads are blonds with attitudes. I love being a redhead. Going red is one of the best choices I have ever made. If you dream of being a redhead you must go for it.
I am shy about photos. But, I might get He-weasel to take a photo of my hair.
xo
Fashion Chalet: Truly, that mouse makes me want one and I am not a big mouse fan. But, sooooo cute!! :)
I am happy to have found your blog and delighted you came and visited mine.
xo
that's exactly my problem. i think, i'm not able to summarize the things that happened to me last month. my mind is going ballistic. i already got sick. perhaps because i abuse my body due to working longer hours.
Iheart:It really sucked being a brown weasel. I love this girl and I love that it didn't cost a fortune and that the salon was entirely attitude free. It was a miracle!
I am actually really excited about the idea of having a bit more happy brain chemicals. I feel like all the IVF messed with my chemistry and that it will take some time for my body to once again reach homeostasis.
I think you and I have the same taste in literature---so I am very excited to read Slouching Towards Bethlehem.
Duchesse: I am looking forward to having more positives on the list than the negatives of the past. Thanks so much for your kind encouragement.xo
on #3, cool! don't forget to mention something catty about the architecture! ;-) i'm jealous as i have not yet been since the renov. the arch, piano, did the demenil in houston. looking forward to your review. NYTimes review here: http://tinyurl.com/3ftwse
Storialist: Love that poem. Really funny!"Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"—
because, with that last plosive, his top denture
popped from his mouth and bounced off an empty chair."LOL!!!!
Merci, I'll need it!
Oh, I know LA has art. It's merely part of my nature to rag on places that have far too much sun and heat for my liking. ;-)
Autumn: It is funny that you think you can't--becuase that is what you do with poetry. But sometimes when we are in the middle of a situation we cannot boil it down to its essence. I know that so well in my own life.
I hope that you are able to take some time away from work and give your mind and body a break. Take care of yourself.
xo
SUR: I missed you!!!!I have to be honest---I have not enjoyed the past new additions to LACMA. It seemed totally incohesive and unrelated. I am so hoping that this new building somehow brings the old buildings into a meaningful context. Does that even make any sense?
I will write about my take on the building before I read the NYT review. I don't want to be influenced by expert opinion, I am kind of like the Sarah Palin of architecture.;-)
Randal: You will do great---I am sure of it. I am with you, I have had more than my fill of summer. ;-)
'sarah palin of architecture'- come now, give yourself more credit. [didn't she do better though than we all expected last night? but biden was clearly more vice-prez-sounding-- heck, more prez sounding than the O-- ooops is this a politics-free forum? my bad...]
bon weekend! [lastly, i've a theory about your relative aversion to the AIC: those doric and ionic columns-- a thickly slathered BEAUX-art edifice--- and i thought you love them greeks?]
when PIANO [see a recurring theme here?] is done with it, let's talk. ;-) [his addition is due- and your vacation to CHI ought to be planned-- in may of 09: http://tinyurl.com/459veq ]
1.sweet!
2.enjoy your gorgeousness!
3.feel good!
4.have fun!
5.love the list... soooo inspiring!!
bisous!
Don't you just feel fantastic after getting your hair done ...and it turns out great!??!? I feel like a new woman! Glad things are looking up for you and this is a happy list instead of a sad one! Have fun at the wedding - and the museum!
SUR: Well, I am not very knowledgeable and yet that doesn't stop me from talking about the subject. But, I suppose what would make me the Palin of Architecture is if I tried to get a job as the Chair of the Yale Architecture school.;-) ( see, I just winked).
I do love the Greeks. But, LACMA looks to be like several egos colliding. I am so looking forward to your theory.
Perhaps we can both plan a trip to Chicago at the same time. Would love an architecture tour of my old home town. Plano seems to be wherever I have lived: LA/Texas/ and now Chicago.
L'air:I am hoping to have a list of 22 good things. But, this is a good start.
Hope you have a lovely weekend!
xo
Maegan: Thank you!!!Good hair does good things for my head!!
Hope you have a great weekend.xo
Eeeek!!! I luv animals but I'm not so sure abt mouse/rat...
I'm glad u have 9 good things dear...red hair sounds really hot* thanks for the reading recommendation... enjoy reading myself... you have a great weekend while I recover from my sickie-thingie that I caught recently...
I'm sure you are a vision in that new hair colour! And so pleased to hear that you're working with the doc to help you manage those 22 crazy things. Kxo
Ooooh, I'm so happy you have this long list of good things in your life. Yay for you!
Lenore:I am not usually a mouse/rat lover--but did you see how cute it is???
So sorry you are sick. I hope you feel much better very soon. xo
K.line:Things are looking up,I hope.
Hope you have a lovely weekend with your mom.xo
ENC: I felt like I needed to balance the blog by focusing on some positive. It feels good.xo
La Belette,
I am so glad you can find 10 things to be happy about, and hope you find another 12 things, so even out the score.
Find that chink of light in your dark tunnel, and then work to make it bigger til it's all light without the dark.
A great haircut and a hair angel are some of the best things in life, why else would there be a such a thing as a Bad Hair Day if hair didn't matter so much? You are very lucky to have found your hair saviour.
One of my favourite books ever is Reef by Romesh Gunesekera - it's short and beautifully written, and shows that it's not just what you put in, but what you leave out that can make a great work of literature. If you havn't read it, I highly recommend it.
Imogen:As great as these 10 are, I do think I need about 150 to balance the scales. Either that or one biggy like winning the lottery.;-)
Gratitude is the closest thing I have to a spiritual practice and I have kept a gratitude journal for years. I can assure you that the last year it has been a little harder to keep that going.
If I should win the lottery, one of the things I will do is hire my hire angel to do my hair every a.m. It is just impossible to get the same kind of blow dry on my own. I don't think hair angel should hold out much hope that I will be hiring her.;-)
Ooh, no, I have not read Reef. I love sharing books. This is so much fun. I LOVE blogging!!
Hope you have a very happy weekend.xo
It's at times like these that it's cruel not to post pictures of yourself. Your hair sounds beautiful!
Did you get 'I was told there would be cake?' Did you enjoy?
Really SO glad to hear about your little bits of happy.
Closet Therapist:But think how I saved your eyes from seeing it when it was horrible. It all balances out.;-) It is a great colour. It is so good that He-weasel continues to compliment me on it without any prodding.
Jaywalker: I did and I really enjoyed it. It made me crave more essay. I find non-fiction so much more satisfying than fiction. Yet, really good creative non-fiction is hard to find. I do feel sure that your book will be much better--- "I was told there'd be Belgian waffles."
i wanna see the new haircut!
hey stranger - i've been away for a while, but am happy to be back. we finally made it to france, my blog updates our journey. i'm so happy you are happy....finding things to be happy about. remember to live in the moment, not the past or the future but today...that's all you have, today, so enjoy it and savor it. we always seem to rush though the day to get to the next, but why? stop and smell the roses is great saying. we are so happy here in rural and I mean "rural" france...internet is so slow, boy are we spoiled.
glad you hair is back to normal and that you are still loving J. Crew. I miss J. Crew already.
Aizat: I am shy!;-)
OJL:YOU ARE IN FRANCE!!!I am so happy you have done it. I am so thrilled for you both. I cannot wait to hear about your journey.
It does feel good to be able to find something to be grateful about. I am trying to stay in the moment the best I can and not let the grief of the past overtake me.
Miss you already. I will do some Jcrew shopping in your name. And, I cannot wait to hear the story of the first time your honey does your hair. I am hoping that he will be your hair angel.
Good hair and a chance of increased serotonin, does life get any better than this?!
I never realized that before, but you're right, there is a certain sadness about her eyes..... it almost makes her more fragile as much as it makes her more gorgeous when photographed! Thanks for the comment.
PS: I love that little mouse.. :)
xo/ fashion chalet
I could do with a hair fairy too. Glad you have found yours. I must read that 'cake' book it had rave reviews over here, and her choices look very interesting.
I hope you enjoy your culture fix, I always find it uplifting even if the art is crap, the buildings themselves are often worth the trip. Have fun
Cybill: Now if I could just lose some weight. Good hair, weight loss and seratonin are the trifecta of happiness.;-)
Fashion Chalet:Sadness and depth can add to beauty, don't you think? All that perky happiness of beach-babe type models lack gravitas that creates a depth of beauty.
I do love that mouse. Soooooo cute!!
Indigo:Come to L.A. and I will take you to the hair angel and we can do some museums. We have some great museums---maybe not as good as London. But, still good. I was blown away by the quality of the contemporary art collection the L.A. Broad has.
The Cake book is a fun read. I really liked it.Her book list is great.
