10 things I am loving today

1. Movies that don't seem like musicals that have musical moments. I just watched Dans Paris for the umpteenth time. Every time I see this scene it makes me cry.

Here is another moment in Magnolia that makes me sniff.

2. My new Jo Malone Orange Blossom cologne. If only the fragrance lasted longer than three minutes. Maybe if I got the Orange Blossom Body Creme.

3. Getting new books in the mail earlier than I expected them. I just got: Are you there Vodka? It's me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler; Home: A Short History of an Idea by Witold Rybczynski; and The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard.

4. My new Boatneck Microstripe Long-Sleeve Tee (item #16863), which retails for $29.50. It is available in this white and navy microstripe pattern, as well as a white and light grey microstripe from JCrew. It is going to be my most worn tee of the summer.

5. Seeing Lily run the obstacle course at her puppy class. I wish I had video to show you of this adorableness. She jumps the gate like she is an Alpo dog in a commercial. Sooooo cute!!!!!

6. Huell Howser's staff emailed me and asked me for my phone number. I now live in hope that I will get a phone call from Huell. I have a song for you, Huell.

7. The Ficarre clip that lovely Leah told me about. This is the best hair clip ever. I did a French twist at 9 a.m. yesterday and it stayed in perfect place until I took it down. I got mine at Nordstroms. I am going to order one from the Lilly collection for obvious reasons. You can get 15% off if you order directly from Ficarre and use the code, SPRING09.

8. For the last week it hasn't been hot in L.A. I fear my week free of complaining about L.A. may soon be coming to an end as the weather begins to warm.

9. I just caught up on all of the New Yorker's Fiction Podcast. I love this series. I love that it is free and I love hearing which stories writers love. My two favorite stories of the series, so far, are, surprisingly, the one by John Updike, Playing with Dynamite and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Be prepared to be freaked out should you listen to "The Lottery".

10. We watched Last Chance Harvey and I LOVED it. When I watched it I heard my say out loud, "I love a happy ending." I didn't know that about myself until I said it. But, it has to be a certain kind of happy ending and this movie has it.

I bought the Jo Malone lavender and amber cologne and body cream last time I was in Chicago. You are right, the body cream scent lasts much longer. I was quite disappointed in the cologne. Loved the scent but I used it up in two months.

I am so excited for you to read Chelsea! And I'm with you on the Jo Malone. Grent scents, not the best staying power.
...Glad you like happy endings! :)

Just added Dans Paris to the top of my Netflix queue, can't believe I haven't heard of it!

A musical moment that always makes me cry is from Philadelphia, when Tom Hanks is listening to Opera and explaining it to Denzel Washington..I sob and swoon all at the same time.

Has he called yet? Huell? How exciting!

I enjoyed Last Chance Harvey on the plane to LA, a sweet movie.

I've heard the Jo Malone fragrances aren't particularly long lasting - but at least you get a good three minutes!
I've been wondering whether to get that book "are you there vodka.." tell me what you think of it when you've read it, please.

Now I have to see that movie Dans Paris! And I loved Magnolia. A friend had to drag me to it because I thought it would be unbelievably boring. Course I cried through half the movie. 3. Love that title, Are you there Vodka, It's me, Chelsea. 6. I really hope Huell calls you! I bet he's going to want you to show him around Valencia. Aren't you glad you live there now?

Glad you're liking that tee. It's such a classic!

Maybe Huell Howswer wants to hire you to work on his show...

We love Chelsea! MrB wants to go to a taping of her show if we EVER make it to LA.

"Home:A Short History of an Idea" is one of my favorites. I read it in college (Interior Design major) and am rereading it now. Hope you enjoy it!

French twist? I didn't know Chubby Checker recorded a version en français.

Such a lot to be grateful for! I'm intrigued by that gorgeous hair clip ... though I don't think I've got enough hair left for a twist.

Never thought I'd be saying THAT.

I have Bybczynski's Home and The Poetics of Space on my "to read" shelf. Of course there are some 40+ other books on that shelf but I hope to get to them all soon.

The J Crew tee looks nice. I am still wearing my J Crew cashmere short sleeve tee and thinking I should buy another. By then it might actually get warm, not that I mind the cool weather mind you.

Gosh, The Lottery freaked me out just reading it, I think I would be afraid to listen to it.

Happy endings are the best, along with your posts. Great list Belette.

I am hoping to see Last Chance Harvey tomorrow - I am going to the flicks with a friend and it is either that or Looking for Eric. I voted for Harvey so I am waiting to hear if she agrees.

If not, I will have to find someone else to go with!

YES about the Magnolia. The song is unbearably moving. So many parts of Magnolia kill me! What about William Macy : I have so much love to give!

Re Huell Howser, I knew a guy who worked for HH and said he was a real prick. I remember being so surprised! Edit this out, if you want! xo

Great list! The Magnolia soundtrack is one of the few CD's that I keep in constant rotation, and even though I am not a big fan of the movie - the clip you have here is hands down my favorite part of the whole film.

ah yes, the fragrance wardrobe. it's a slippery slope (you're playing right into their hands).
but smells are so pleasant.
when they're good.

Hello Belette!

1) Considering I've never seen Dans Paris, this is a very touching moment, conveyed so beautifully by the actors... very believable, especially the man with the shallow breathing and drawn posture. From what I can understand, they've had a fight and are deciding on whether to break up, and then decide not to? I've never seen Magnolia, amazing since I've seen just about everything else Philip Seymour Hoffman has done (he's from a suburb of Rochester and does local interviews often).
2) You‘d think the cologne would last longer… $2 a milliliter? As for as the body creme goes, I‘d buy it on presentation alone, both visual and verbal… “The scent of clementine leaves in the morning dew sparkles above a heart of orange blossom and water lily, transporting the wearer to a garden oasis.” Is this a love potion?
3) I’ll check out the links later, but a big fan of Chelsea… the perfect combination of beauty, brains, and humor!
4) Classical, light, and attractive
5) Awww, no video this time!???
6) Lucky Huell
7) Love the opal
8) Noooo! OK, bring it on…
9) Alright, Belette, we have pod casts as another connection… I live off of them (the audio ones, because they let me do other things while listening) I am going to download a few, and listen first to The Lottery (Is this the classic short story I first read in middle school, about stoning?)
10) Glad it was the good kind of happy ending…

Great post… I love a good sampling!
Thank you,
David

Your list is refreshing and stimulating, because most of it's new to me. It's like taking a little trip out of my rut. Thank you! That cologne sounds magnifique---I used to live where there are orange trees, and always swooned when they were in bloom.

I saw a film of The Lottery in junior high school, and it is truly spine chilling.

Off to see The Proposal... au revoir... Bon week-end!

PS -- Just Downloaded 27 episodes of The New Yorker Fiction podcast directly to iphone and am going to start listening right now while I work. Thanks for the introduction... trying to find good free podcasts is hit and (mostly) miss... it's good to get recommendations! One of my favorites is This American Life.
