6. The Smoke House
I met a friend for lunch last week at this historic Burbank eatery. The Smoke House opened up in 1946, which is ancient according to L.A. standards. It is right across the street from the Warner Brothers Studio and blocks away from the Universal Studios lot. This place is the definition of old school. Really and truly I felt like I was in Madmen when I walked in. I expected Don Draper, Roger Sterling and Pete Campbell to walk in and order martinis and bloody rare steaks.
We sat in a vinyl red boot, a booth that big butts of fame have likely warmed. I bet Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Errol Flynn, Judy Garland, and Katherine Hepburn have at one time or another sat where I was sitting. The service was so good that made us wonder if the waiter thought we were celebrities. A photo girl came to our table and took our photo; I was for that moment imagining what it must be like to be Miley Cyrus. It was a nice change from restaurants where waitresses tell you their names and call groups of two or more, "guys".
At the table behind us where a bunch of old school Hollywood types guzzling martinis like Gatorade and slurping down oysters as if they had after lunch plans to meet their mistresses. I overheard one of the old school men ask the waiter for oyster crackers. Something about the oyster cracker request cracked me up. And, then there was a 60-something guy at a table across from us who ordered a steak sandwich and a scotch who gave me the eye.
We didn't have the Smoke House's famous Garlic cheese bread as I was there with a vegan friend who had a plate of steamed vegetables. FYI: This is not a place for vegans. As I am not a vegan I had the steak, blue cheese and arugula salad. If I had been there with my He-weasel I would have ordered the cheese bread and a martini or two. My salad was good, not great but good. But, quite frankly, I think that the ambiance makes up for any of the food's mediocrity.
I read that is a favorite place of George Clooney. And, I can so see him here. Sadly, I did not see him when I was there. But, I will be back and hopefully then I will see George and if not the cheese bread will make the trip worthwhile.
For visitors to L.A. let me tell you that if you want to see celebrities I would come to the Smoke House for lunch or dinner and skip the Hard Rock Cafe. Celebrities do not ever go to the Hard Rock Cafe.
7. Cheap nail salons
I am not sure why but I do think Southern California is the nail salon capitol of the world and because of that you can get a mani and pedi for $30. In any five block radius in L.A. I bet you would find at least six nail salons. In Chicago I paid $50 for a pedicure alone and it was not like the pedicure was so much better than the one in L.A., actually there were no fancy spa chairs in Chicago. It is true that I never use the massage chair because to me it feels like being hit by a sack of lemons, but I could use it if I wanted to.
Living in L.A. for so long has made me permanently cheap about manis and pedis. Every time I went for a mani/pedi in Chicago I griped internally that I had to tip almost as much as I had to pay for a manicure in L.A. I never took into consideration that housing was cheaper or that because my feet were in boots seven months out of the year I needed less frequent pedicures so amortized the Chicago pedicure was cheaper. No, my mind doesn't work like that and I am bad at math.
I go to Nina. I like Nina because I can 80% of the time understand her English and she is funny and is really fast. What I don't like about her is hearing how much she is making in real estate and in the stock market. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy Nina is doing so well. I only wish I was doing as well as my nail gal. Maybe I could get her to give some tips. Get it? Tips! Mwah-ha-ha!!!
8. Incredible orange skied sunsets that can only exist in places with lots of smog
9. L.A. International Airport
While my two favorite airports in the world are O'Hare in Chicago and Charles de Gaulle in Paris, for location alone. I do like LA airport, especially the departure level, as it reminds me that I can get out of here. I am not stuck. This is not the Hotel California. And, I do sort of like the 60's space age architecture that is the landmark Encounters Theme Restaurant. The interior is very Austin Power's meets the Jetsons.
10. L.A. area public bathrooms almost always have toilet seat protectors
I do usually squat but there are times when a gal wants to sit. In L.A. I can, if I chose, cover the public toilet seat with five seat covers. In Chicago I never-ever-ever saw a seat cover. I am not sure if it is illegal there or what. But, in Chicago squatting is the only option.
Photo of LA sunset comes from here.

Ooh, the Smoke House looks like my kinda place!
LAX isn't bad for an airport (certainly probably the only thing that LA has over Paris is the airport!) and some terminals are better than others. I like the Southwest terminal because they have a Gordon Biersch. Once I get through security, I'm ready for a tall cold one.
Belette, I'm trying to play catch up. Looks like you've been painting the town red? The Smokehouse looks like a great place to do it!
6) Love the booths... full red wrap-arounds usually reserved for a Vegas shows. Miley Cyrus!? Hard Rock Cafe --UGH!
7) You're bad at math!!? OK, miss pie (3.14, not far from mine at 3/20, by the way, fellow Pices). But, yes, it seems your salon is cheaper even than the Wal Mart salon we have here... how can that be!? I've always wondered what it would be like to go... but I'd look silly, and my feet are so ticklish that I'd most definitely (however involuntarily) kick the pedicurist in the face. Mwah-ha-ha!!!
8) Thank God for California smog!
9) Airport... what is that?
10) I carry my own toilet seat on a chain around my neck.
Ta Ta,
David
That's some cheap mani/pedi, girlfriend!
a friend gave us a poster of this garry winogrand picture (hope the link works). i don't love having an l.a. reminder hanging (framed, framed. i am not living with posters tacked to the wall, i assure you) in my hall, but now i will try to take it as you do - as a reminder of leaving l.a.
i do my own polish, so there is no reason to go back. ;)
Is it okay if I steal the term "oyster cracker" when referring to the strain of my fellow crackers that I heap much disdain upon?
Four thousand bonus points for mentioning Hotel California, even if you 1)hate the song (you shouldn't, everyone loves coked out Cali rock) and/or 2)think it's overplayed (it's not).
I'm a close, personal friend of Mr. Clooney. I'll have his people call your people.
It occurs to me that if George knew Lily's mom were dining there he would have popped in to say salut! We think you are correct on the nail salons, hands down. (We find the seat covers alarming for some reason and have elected not to ponder why.)
Smiles, we are liking the list!
tp
So true about the mani-pedi. So cheap!
Yes, indeed, The Smoke House is old Hollywood, and the food is average by all counts, but it has that certain casual work vibe of the industry.
I've never been to the airport restaurant; I take your word for it.
That restaurant is SO my thing. We have to go there and have 3 martinis each and pick up the old guys at the table next to us! You should make one of your good LA things the pools in the chichi rich houses. C'mon you gotta love that. :-)
Hey, awesome!
Look at you, loving stuff about L.A.. How wonderful. I'm excited to see more of your list, especially for restaurant tips.
I must check out The Smoke House. Hubby and I love to see celebrities, we always get giddy and come up with stupid things we should go and tell them (?).
Haha to the red sunsets...you managed to squeeze a good thing out of a not so good thing....love positiveness especially when I am not feeling it
LAX??? questionable. I like Schiphol in Amsterdam, and Sydney airport. I don't remember De Gaule and I do LOVE O'Hare's design.
Toilet-seat covers? Hmmm. I have not surveyed, so observant of you.
Nail places...I never did my nails until coming to LA so I take your word for it but I am generally annoyed because they don't like me for choosing the cheapest and most basic, and yes, my nail people always brag about their homes, jewelry, etc....why did I go to school
love ya' LBR and happy Wednesday.
Love airports. My fav is in Oslo--all pale Scandinavian wood and glass . . .
if I say that your list is shaping up to be rather eclectic, I believe I'm stretching the meaning of the word "eclectic" -- toilet seat covers and pedicures and LAX?
Hmmmm. . . .
The Smoke House sounds like so much fun. I would love a steak and a few martinis.
That is a cheap mani/pedi and I am not even in a city.
Nice list... Miss J will meet La B at The Smoke House anytime!
So cool! I have actually been to the Smoke House... I guess I didn't know it was such a landmark at the time. Fabulous post!
xoxox,
CC
P.S. So true about white jeans, darling! Why is it that they are just a magnet for spills?
Booking my ticket online as I write - would not want to miss out on this fabulousness....and I thought people loved LA for Rodeo Drive. What were they thinking??? xv
I'm with DP, the Smoke House is TOTALLY my kind of place.
Toilet seat protectors are a must.
Holy cats, I don't think I can get a mani-pedi for under $40 here in MN!
I would go a long way for a Clooney sighting. Ah ha
I love this. It's really optimistic, and I think you've done a great job of finding positives.
I see a plethora of nail salons everywhere I go! It's like they're weeds or something!
"Charles de Gaulle"
(I thought you'd like to know the good spelling of it...)
(it was just a tiny mistake, though)
(but, french pride, you know... ;) )
(but do not hesitate to point out the mistakes I'm sure I'm making)
I don't like CDG airport.
I just don't understand it.
But : have you ever been to Dubai Airport ?
Is incredibly huge.
And the bathrooms over there are incredibly clean (and incredibly numerous and un-crowded).
Last time I was in Dubai, we spent quite a LOT of time there (bathrooms).
Ok, that's because we were a bit sick, but anyway.
You can sit, with no suspicion.
But I do prefer smaller airports.
Like my hometown's : Bordeaux.
Love the post- laughing out loud. What I liked about NYC was the mani/pedis. They were similarly cheap there and the nail gals knew the right amount of exfoliation- not too much else one would lose the very necessary callouses for walking the too many blocks in too high heels.
Smoke House = totally my kind of place. I love the "manly man" meaty places in part because it validates my decision to get a martini- it seems like the only appropriate drink in such a setting.
I too would LOVE to eat at the Smoke House. Pure glamour.
Nails bars are hideously costly in London, I would like nothing better than a pedicure but like most luxuries it will stay just that.
Believe it or not I have been inside L.A airport just the once in transit on Christmas day, I do not remember it looking so glamorous as this image.
So my favourite airport of course has to be Honolulu, it was just so lovely to see so few doors and all I remember is the beautiful dark wood everywhere too.
Now I want to see Oslo too it sound divine.
Deja: I think you'd like the SH!
Carol: If I am going to paint a town, red is the best colour to paint it.
Dave: I think L.A. nail salons are cheaper than Walmart in NY because we have soooooo many of them.
Dave: Airport is the place that will be the gateway to my leaving this place!!!
Janie: It is a great deal!
Randal: Oyster cracker is all yours.
Editor: I really like that print. But, too bad they aren't walking towards the airport.;-)
K-line: You come here and I am taking you, Deja, Wendy and anyone else who wants to join us.
Storialist: I still don't love L.A.;-)
Preppy Princess: I don't think CLooney goes for mom's.;-)
KT:I have 5 nail salons in walking distance from my house.
Lakeviewer: I love old school places.
Mrs.LittleJeans: Every time I see one of those amazing sunsets I know the price we pay to our health to get them.
Next time you are in Chicago check out the loos and you will see I am right.;-)
Miss Canvendish: I have been to Oslo but I drove from Sweden so I missed out on the airport.
Mater: I have to reach far and wide to find things I like about here. So, expect the list continue to stretch the bounds of what you might expect on such a list.
Mardel: I love that there are so many of us who are up for steaks and martinis!
Miss Janey: Let's go!!!:-)
Carrie: I love that you'd been there. See, it is as I said, celebreties do go there!
Vicki: I will meet you at the airport. We will go for a drink at the LAX bar, get our nails done, see a sunset, go safely to the loo, and have steaks and martinis.
WendyB:Another steak and martini gal!!!:-)
Maggie May: I couldn't agree more.
Sal: It really is the most amazing thing to have such a plethora of nail salon that the prices are driven down so low.
Kristin: Come on over!
Enc: Optimistic and positive? Who me?;-)
Gabrielle: Thank you so much for catching it and telling me. I truly appreciate it. I only like CDG airport because when I am there it means I am in Paris!
I have not been to Dubai but if the Dubai tourist board would like to send me I would be happy to write glowing reviews about their airport and toilets!;-)
Southern Aspirations: The larger the town and the more immigrants I think the lower the price at nail salons.
Indigo16: I was so outraged to pay as much for a pedicure as I spent to get a haircut. Madness. And, yet, if I had to do a pedicure on someone I think I might charge $2000. I would not enjoy touching strangers feet.
This photo of the LAX restaurant is taken at night with the completion of its makeover and new lighting. It has changed a little in the last couple of years.
I love the Hawaii airport and seeing everyone in their leis. So exotic!
Steak, bleu cheese, and arugula? *drool*
I love going to LAX. Even just driving around and around the airport.
So not everything is neagative? The Smoke House (smoking not allowed I suppose?), the airport, the toilets...
I remember the airport architecture already from my first visit in 65!
George Clooney may be easier to run into in Italy than in LA? I saw him once on Lago di Como in a boat.
#6 - George Clooney's production company is "Smoke House Pictures". When I worked in Burbank I was there often. I am not a fan of the food but the bread is alright. If you liked The Smokehouse, go to Musso and Frank and chat up the bartenders. They know everything about everything. The food there (I hear, as I've never eaten there) is awful, aka "old school" but the bar is outstanding. I recommend the sidecar, but my husband loves their martinis. The staff has been working there longer than I've been alive..
LAX lit up those glowy tube things over the 4th of July holiday - red white and blue. It was actually quite pretty.
I always think of "the Graduate" when I am passing by that multicolored tile hallway thing.
It's not a bad airport at all.
I want to have a meal at the Smoke House. I love everything about "old time Hollywood."
Gotta take advantage of the low priced mani/pedi!
Amy: I love a good steak salad. It was a little light on the blue cheese.
I hope you get to L.A. while I am still here.
Peter: I have to work hard to find things. If I find 365 things that don't suck about here I want some kind of award or acknowledgment from the Mayor of L.A.
Bien sur, no smoking allowed.
When George is in L.A. he supposedly comes to the Smoke House a lot. I would prefer to see him in Lake Como. But, I would be happy to see him anywhere.
Hollarback: For years I have wanted to go to Musso and Franks and I have never been. I did go to Chasens back in the 80's. I LOVE places with old timey waiters. The best!
I would have loved to see the red, white and blue LAX. Very cool!
Thanks for the tidbit about George Clooney and the Smoke House. That is so cool. They must love him there.
TopSurf: When you come to L.A. I will take you for the mani and to the Smoke House. Now get out here!
Are you saying the revolving toilet seat covers at O'Hare just go round and round in a circle so you only think you're getting a fresh one? ..and I always said, 'I won't get fooled again'.
I'll have to ask my father-in-law (who lives in Pasadena) if he is familiar with the Smoke House -- if it has gin and steak, it's his kind of place. And since I'm vegetarian, I could dine on the garlic cheese bread ...
L.A. from the freeway always makes me think of Oz. I'm not sure if this is something that doesn't suck about L.A., though.
oh i like hearing about some of the places you like in l.a. the garlic and cheese bread in the old school place sounds deelicious. makes me wonder why i don't have garlic bread more often since i love it...
have a wonderful day, love!
The Smoke House looks fabulous. Remember when salads were iceberg lettuce heads and tomatos cut in quarters? Now that was fine dining back in the day :)
oh, if you want lovely service and *good* food, i recommend lunching at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel. my friend and i went there on impulse last time we were in LA and we count it among our top 10 dining experiences! we sat out in the courtyard and it was just wonderful
all true. and smoke house just look to delicious. i have to go check it out one of these days.
I love the smoke house! they give you this little pot of sherry when you order clam chowder and I think it is the coolest!
Such cheap nail salons- so lucky - I pay more, but she speaks English like me and we have good conversations, none about investing.
I'm currently creating a colour system and was asked by Karen to name a colour California Sunshine - which I did to a rather dirty yellow (ha ha).
Gorgeous sunset, and I love that restaurant! It's like something from the Jetsons!
I live in York in the UK and it's historic and grand and so different from LA- not that I've been - but your '365 things that don't suck' is making me want to go. Great idea, btw - I think a book deal is on the horizon...?
Loved this slice of life in a land I've never spent time in as an adult. Both shots of the restaurant are great...the one with Clooney too, but then he'd look great if he were standing in front of a tent, maybe even better! Speaking of...I bet Rosemary Clooney sat on those red booths also.
Never have seen "mani" as a shortened version of manicure!
I noticed that same toilet seat blight in New York. Oh well, it's good exercise for the thighs to squat!
La Bel!!!! Wow, finally I'm able to comment after 3 wks of not being able to!
Actually now that I think of it, there are many who won't be happy about that....
:)
susan: I never trusted the O'hare plastic seat covers. And, that is the only place in Chicago that I ever saw them.
Jennifer: If your FIL likes gin and steak he would love this place.
l'air du temps: I haven't had garlic bread in forever. I think I am going to remedy that soon.
Hope you have a lovely day too!
Margo :On occasion, I still enjoy an iceberg lettuce wedge covered with blue cheese. I know it is about as healthy as chocolate cake---but it is delicious.
bonnie-ann black: I haven't been to the Polo Lounge in YEARS. Maybe I need to take a trip back there. I always loved the wallpaper they had. It is so L.A. in the 1970s.
Savvy Mode: Thanks! It is nice validation to get from another L.A. blogger.
Hanako66: You have me drooling. I love sherry and sherry with clam chowder. Yum!
Imogen: I think I would pay more for fluency and to not have to hear about how rich she is. I always leave there feeling that I ought to learn more about investing.
LOL @ California Sunshine!
Teresa: The Horizon restaurant at LAX is even MORE Jetsony inside.
I have a great idea. I come to historic and grand York and you come here to L.A. I suppose the grass is always greener, but I would much prefer to be in Kent than in LA-LA land.
Really, you think my LA antipathy and desperately find something to like about it would make a good book? You are most kind!
Lydia: I bet George and Rosemary have been there together. It is such a great place. It is like stepping back into a time machine.
I don't know if others call manicures "manis" and pedicures "pedis" or if it just my extreme laziness.;-)
I bet women in NY and Chicago have stronger thighs than in LA.
♥ Braja: I am thrilled you are back. I don't believe for a second that anyone feels anything other than delighted to see you.
Oh, dearest! I think this is one of my favorite posts! Not only do I love the Smoke House and go there often, I laughed heartily at the tips joke and second all your recommendations. Hope you are doing well!
Some things about LA that are well and truly worth loving LA about, film studios, Disneyland, pockets of old time Hollywood, all that over the top evidence of money. It's like no other place in the world. But I can see why George Clooney prefers Italy to LA.
Oooh the cheap nail places are at the top of my list!!! And, nothing beats the cleanliness of the bathrooms! I do admit that I cannot STAND LAX and while CDG is certainly worse in my opinion, LAX is not my fave.
A great post for me as I live in OC and rarely go to LA. I keep bugging my husband about spending time like a tourist, sightseeing, but he gets fed up with driving to L.A. during the week for work, he doesn't want to go back on weekends. I thought the Starbucks on Malibu Canyon is where you see most stars. Is that true?
ahh, I am so glad to see you are still whittling away at your 365 things that don't suck about LA....lol....I heard that the getty almost burned up a few days ago on the news but that was probably grossly exaggerated...from a wildfire? anyway, hoping it was not hurt as it was another reason why but then again, not sure which one you thought didn't suck or maybe that counted for two as there are two, no?
the garlic bread is something I would have had being a sucker for greasy cheesy garlicy bread....one caveat is it must be made with fresh garlic which it most certainly would have been....I wish you had seen george, since I have heard he is short and so would love to know....
and cheap nail salons...I don't go to them myself, although a pedi is needed, I am too cheap when I can do it myself after a long soak in my lovely tub but they are cheap around here too...we have many women from southeast asia here and you probably do too and they all seem to OWN the nail salon places...not just rent a space but own all the spaces....the nail business must be a good one...
so onward to the next few reasons why LA sucks not... ;)
xoxoxo
