Well, not literally. What happened is yesterday He-weasel and I went to visit his family and when we got there we saw that a tiny-dog( I think a Fox terrier mix weighing all of eight pounds) was on top of the tea house they are building on their property. The poor dog was stuck up on the roof and scared. We have no idea how he got there. It was our guess that he had run away last night in response to the fireworks.
We tried to tempt the dog off the roof with Cheetos and water ( there was a ramp from the top of the roof to the ground) but he wouldn't come. Finally He-weasel climbed up and rescued him. I can tell you that I fell even more in love with him as I saw him rescuing the scared puppy. The dog fell in love with He-weasel too, demonstrated by the many puppy dog kisses of appreciation given to He-weasel for his act of kindness, much to Lily's initial horror. Moments later Lily and the Fox terrier were playing like old friends. I have never seen Lily have so much fun--- not even when playing with her favorite toy, Mr. Bear. The whole time we were there Lily was playing with her new friend. No time was wasted on sitting, napping or standing still.
It seemed well groomed and well cared for, save that the dog had no tag and no collar. As he was found on the roof I started calling the dog Roofy and the name caught on. I also came up with a joke I am very proud of, when Roofy pees you can say that the roofy is leaking. Yes, I had a few cocktails when I came up with this joke and I assure you it was funnier at the time.
Instead of writing the blog post I intended for today I spent yesterday trying to find Roofy's home. We took photos of Roofy and took them to the pound so in case his owners are trying to find him they would know where he was. We did not leave him at the pound as we feared that they might put him down before his owners got there. We also took him in to see if he had been micro chipped and sadly he had not. Why do people not do this? It is so cheap. I think I paid $45 for it and it is a great comfort to know that if Lily was in the same situation that she could have quickly been reunited with us. We also walked my in-laws neighborhood asking if anyone recognized Roofy. No one did.
Roofy is now with my in laws and he is ridiculously happy. He is a very friendly, loving and affectionate dog. When we left him he was curled up in my mother-in-laws arms like a baby. So cute!! When we got Lily home from her day with Roofy she passed out with fatigue. Never have I seen her happier or more tired. I learned one thing today, Lily needs a doggy brother. It would be so wrong for her to be an only child.
Today my in-laws are calling no kill shelters and putting up pictures of Roofy in their neighborhood. I, of course, hope that Roofy is reunited with his family. However, I have heard that many people are dumping dogs off in my in laws' neighborhood as they can no longer afford their pets and if that is the case I am hoping with all my heart that my in laws fall more in love with Roofy than they already are. I am very hopeful as my mother in law was already calling Roofy her son and saying that would make him Lily's uncle. I am pretty sure Roofy is sleeping with them tonight. Who cannot fall in love with a dog who has slept in their bed? Nah, I think Lily may have an Uncle. Now I can't wait until the day we can find Lily a brother.
Note about the picture of Roofy: After this picture was taken we found a rope that was lighter and more appropriate to use as a makeshift leash. He looks so sad in that picture but I assure you he had as wonderful a day as you can have when separated from your people.

what a cute doggie! You are right, Lily needs a sibling. I have found that having two dogs is actually easier than one. They have each other and they have a lot of fun. And besides, as an only child, it is not fun.
Hope you had a great fourth!
What an adventure! But I don't recommend trying to lure anything with Cheetos. What if Britney Spears had turned up instead? Then you'd be stuck with her. Ugh.
Awwww, he's a cutie!!
Oh, I hope he stays with your in-laws. What a darling pooch.
Cute pup and cute story! Friends of ours adopted a young dog whose owner abandoned him because the dog wasn't allowed on the bus with him--yes, really! My friend's barely-teen daughter indignantly bounded to the rescue and ten or so years later, Victor (the dog) is still very happy about that decision.
If you don't find Roofy's owners can't you adopt Roofy?
We started a dog group here in town and we have weekly puppy parties and I tell ya, Sadie sleeps for DAYS after hanging with her pals for even an hour. It's the best thing ever. Not to mention it's teaching her some wicked dog social skills and now loves every dog she sees anywhere. Dogs = awesome for sure...
I always love a good puppy story, especially one with a happy ending. Hopefully Lily and Roofy will get to have some play dates until she get a brother of her own.
Roofy looks very well cared for, and I agree, perhaps a victim of dog dumping that is going on everywhere. So sad. Hope all goes well. And I agree that Lily needs a sib. And maybe you need to write about dogs!
Roofy looks like a chihuahua! Those ears are definitely chihuahua ears, and I should know I've just watched Beverley Hills Chihuahua so I feel like a bit of an expert. Until someone proves me wrong of course....
He's so cute!
finders keepers. go back and get him.
ah you did a wonderful thing. i hope he finds a loving home with your in-laws if they can keep him. also lily shouldn't be the only child. she need company soon. : )
That dog is soooo cute! I hope his owners find him, but it sounds like he will have a very happy life if he stays where he is now. What a cute face!
Roofy is so cute, and what a clever name too! Ha ha. Thank you for reminding me...I have to chip our kitties, we had to search over an hour for one of the doodles this past Saturday.
Roofy seems very happy, lucky for him to have found LBR and family.
Very sweet! Husbands sometimes pull off amazing feats--finding bracelets in seaweed, rescuing doggies, no?
Good husband :)
Yay for you for your efforts to rescue Roofy! I agree- two is easier... and so much fun, we went to three doggies! (but alas, I am crazy dog-rescue girl). In any event, good luck to you and thank you for helping!
That name is adorable! And this is how it starts: you see the playing and fooling around and you think it's all chew toys, all the time! :-)
Roofy is one lucky pup to be rescued by He Weasel and either way, reunited with his family or with yours he will be a happy fella, xv.
I love Roofy - he's been abandoned I can tell. He's not going anywhere.
Oh how perfect, Lily and now Roofy - it's a kid book winner, write it!
Yes, can't wait to hear how this plays out! what a Lucky dog :)
He does look so cute. I hope they keep him!
He does look so cute. I hope they keep him!
We still cannot believe anyone would let our dog just 'go' but people do often for the strangest of reasons. Seriously how much does a small dog cost to keep?
I too hope that it is a serendipitous omen that keeps Roofus at your in-laws. I am sure it was meant to be.
I hope Roofy can find it's family... or a new one that will make it happy... Such a cute dog!!
Oh, Roofy is one cool-looking pooch, and as you point out, we *really* wish his parents had micro-chipped him. You and your He-weasel are too wonderful to rescue him, hopefully the efforts underway can reunite him with his family.
tp
Oh.... he's soooo cute! : )
One word.....ADORABLE!!
He's very sweet and under similar circumstances (without a 'no pets' apartment) I would have been very tempted to consider keeping him.
I'll have my wife check out this site. We have a Yorkie who's in reality out third child. She'll get a real hoot out of the past couple of blogs.

Roofy (love the joke, too) looks like a fine little dog. The shot is beautiful. I hope he is reunited with his family, but I bet he won't be. That means he belongs to your mother-in-law. All is well!
He looks so cute and would make an excellent brother for Lily.
My first dog used to come if I yelled 'cheese' rather than his name as he loved it so much.
Such a sweet post ~ you are the dog whisperer!

I see a permanent Lily playmate in your future..........
Words: syncretism, oppobrium, conatus, apposite.... I had no clue.... (All from "Hedgehog" which I am still enjoying....only taking time to read a few pages before bed....)
Roofy is so cute! Hope your in-laws can keep him so Lily will have a regular playmate and friend! Great of He-wasel to play the hero. You should be very proud of him. My husband wouldn't even climb to rescue his daughter!!! Ciao. A.
Sounds like you had quite the dog-day afternoon.
What an interesting way to find a dog! I'm glad you took care of Roofy, and that he is in good hands until his owners find him.
You have a warm, loving heart.
well done, all... hope roofy gets to stay with the inlaws... give lily more reason to visit often :)
Adorable, Miss La B. Miss J is far to familiar with this scenario. She is fond of saying that she can't throw i stick in Altadena w/o hitting a stray dog. The small ones seem easier to place and hopefully Roofy has already found his new home w/ the Rouge-in-laws.
Love the new hair color... tres jolie!
Hooray! I'm rooting for Roofy to find a snuggly new home with your in-laws!
Talk soon...
XOXO

I'm so glad you found a lighter rope for Roofy. The one in the pic looked too much like a noose. :)
People invariably are dropping their dogs off in our neighborhood. Most are also females - which I have one (for five years now) - and I wouldn't trade her for all the money in the world. I tried to find her original owner, to no avail. Unfortunately none of us are geared to take in all the strays, and it is sad and tragic.
Cute doggy. Hope he finds his family and if not I hope he finds a home with your family. Way to save a doggie life.
i was about to leave a comment and I saw your patriotic pup and now I'm ALL distracted!!!!
adorable.
Cute dog.
My friend has a dog like that (it's probably not his though, with us being in the UK and all that).
Gorgeousness.
Come on La Belette, doesn't your house need a new Roofy?
That's a beautiful story, Belette. I do think Lily needs a companion, especially when you and He-W are not around. But I shouldn't talk... I have cats because they use the litter and don't need walks. I used to have just one cat, but found at least two made for happy companions. Again, loved this story... it's a feel-good for sure!

PS -- Great shot of Roofy... I kinda like the makeshift leash he had on... kinda big, but looks soft too, no?
Roofy does have the chihuaha about him... My friend does voluntary work for a Cat Rescue, and they're seeing increasing numbers of animals abandoned for bizarre reasons - One of the lovely cats was 'too vocal', for example! And much of it is down to the economic conditions...
A kiss for Roofy, and here's hoping you can find his owners, or else your ma-in-law falls for him hook, line and sinker! xxx
Can we please keep Roofy? Huh, huh? Please, please? I'm speaking for Lily. I admire all of your efforts to find his family of origin. I may have kept him before all that. Can Roofy and Lily go on wild literary adventures in France, Chicago, Austin, and LA, because those are books I want to read my children. Hurry and write them because my children aren't getting any younger, unfortunately.
well, time marches on and roofy is now , once again, pepe , soooo I guess there isn't much to say about this one....I am so glad you all took such good care of him!
