10 signs that it is time to leave Austin

1. The orchids have fallen off the orchid plant we bought when we moved here. I think that is symbolic. The bloom is off the rose, so to speak.

2. It was 100 degrees at 6 p.m. yesterday. At 6 p.m.!!!

3. In the middle of the night I realized after three months here I only know where one mall is.

4. Every a.m. I am waking up with a new spider bite. They only bite me; they leave He-weasel alone. He says it is because I am sweet.

5. Did I mention the heat?

6. I am growing tired of Tex Mex. I know there is more than Tex Mex to be eaten in Austin--but try telling He-weasel that.

7. Monsieur Inkey's cardiologist from Chicago called yesterday and told us we could take Inkey on the plane with us. He suggested we do a test drive. We will give Inks a half of a Benadryl and wait a half an hour and then to take him for a drive and see if he still meows like crazy. He said if that didn't stop him from singing would come up with another medication that would quiet my tiny tiger without hurting his heart. The shopping of the light weight cat carrier begins as does the singing the praises of the best cat cardiologist in the world, I love you Dr. Luethy!

8. I have 80% of my long stay visa application done. I am only waiting for two documents to arrive. And, it is only 15 days until I go to the French Consulate in Houston.

9. The aforementioned heat is making me break out. It is not cute to be in your 40's and be needing Botox and benzoyl peroxide. One zit was a shock. Well, today there are four. I should go to CVS and buy some products to treat this pimple plague--but as it is 9 a.m. it is already too hot to leave the house. Perhaps I will mail order something. To emphasize how sad and pathetic that last statement is, we live less just blocks away from a drug store and I am thinking of paying for shipping of a tube of Clearasil.

10. Each day it is growing hotter and more humid and it will continue to do so. I no longer want to go outside because of the weather. I am living like an air conditioned shut in who only occasionally goes out for meals. If only I qualified for Meals on Wheels.

Now let me say, Austin is a great town. There are many fantastic things about it and there are great things to do. But, as I am a heat hater I cannot get out and enjoy many of those things. As soon as I go out doors I start complaining, "it is toooooooo hot." Then He-weasel says,"It's not hot, it's warm." Then I say,"Well, I am hot." And, then he says, "Well, I am not." And, then I say,"Well, you're Greek--you can take it." I know, its riveting conversation isn't it? That folks, is how we begin every outing from our air conditioned town house. Our most frequented Austin locale in this Dantesque inferno is Snowbeach Hawaiian Shaved Ice. On weekdays there is rarely a line which cuts down on my whining and fantasizing about trying flavors I might try, like wedding cake or margarita. What I do get is a medium shave ice with sangria, cherry coke and strawberry. I try to eat it before the elements turn my mound of flavored snow into a melted mess of over-sweet syrup. I know I said I was whining the other day and you all kindly said I wasn't. Well, today I am a whining weasel. It's toooooo hot.

Picture of thermometer is from here.

I don't like the heat either which is why I realized that I need more than one place to live. Sure having a house in the south of france is awesome, but there will be a point when I want to have snow, ice, sleet and rain. I'm just sayin'.

Don't get me wrong I like warm weather, but I want to go to it!

La Belette Rouge said...

F.O.T.: Warm weather is one thing. 100 degrees is another. I want to come back home to Seattle. Rain, please! And not the 98 degrees and 100% humidity kind of rain.:-)

F.O.T. said...

Yes, you are right in that warm is different that f'in' HOT!

It is so hard to sleep in hot weather! Thankfully you have air conditioning.

The next time someone scoffs at my utter hatred of heat, I'm going to point them to this post. 100° is ridiculous at any point, moreso at SIX PM.

Seattle could be groovy. Not too hot, not blankets of snow to shovel, lots o' rain and overcast gloom. Parfait. ;-)

La Belette Rouge said...

Randal: You are so right. It is just wrong for it to get hotter in the p.m. As I grew up in SoCal I am used to the ocean breeze cooling things down in the evening. No ocean breeze here in Austin. I truly don't know how people live here. I cannot believe that one could never acclimate to this kind of heat. And, yet, I see people out running in this 100 degree heat--so they must. I am happy I will be in France soon where I will once again need a scarf and a coat.

I miss the June gloom of the west coast. Seattle is great for gray, rain, gloom, and lots of coffee. Colleen, you sure you want to leave?;-)

My people, my people!!! This french/irish gal and temperatures over 82 do NOT mix. In my 20s I toyed with Mexico as a new part-time living solution... but even in the mountains t'is hot. I'm with FOT, I like to go visit heat (thinking beach club in Nice with chaise-side service and the Med at your toe-tips); but full-time hothouse living ain't for me. But then neither is living in Portland with 3 months of decent weather a year. (See, FOT, my strategy isn't just to live in present but bitch in the present/ha) ... but I digress. One small side note, LBR ... hopefully, you'll know where even fewer malls are in France ... just sayin' ...

WendyB said...

I can't take just reading about such heat.

La Belette Rouge said...

JNRR: No, this Irish/French/Osage/Dalmatian gal was not meant for heat either. It is difficult to find a place that gets the weather balance right. L.A., no. Chicago, no. Seattle, not really. I think travel is the answer.

Hee-hee to your bitch in the moment strategy. I am so with you on that.

And, I hear you on the malls in France. But, when in Rome it is good to know where the Coliseums are.;-)

La Belette Rouge said...

WendyB: It is oppressive and it is impossible to dress cute in this weather. I left the house in a tank top yesterday. Bad-bad-bad!;-)

Okay, this is GREAT news about Inks!!! Hooray... he'll be able to go on the plane. I am looking forward to hearing about the benadryl test!!! I so hope that works well for him and he's not too uncomfortable.

I'm with y'all on the heat. It is just miserably stifling. No thanks! Besides, seasonal weather and plenty of gray days works best for us creative peeps anyway!

La Belette Rouge said...

B: I was so thrilled to hear that he thinks Inks heart will be fine on the plane. That is such a huge relief. Now we just got to work on getting him not to sing. I really hope the Benadryl works. It certainly works for me.

And, B. In this heat it is too hot for Queso at the Oasis and that is when you know it is time to get the hell out of Austin!

enc said...

The clock is ticking. You'll get everything sorted out, I just know it. :D

La Belette Rouge said...

ENC: There does feel as if there is a momentum moving and that very soon we will be on our way to France. Le sigh!

chicamericaine said...

Not to rub it in but to give you something to look forward to: it's 66 F in Paris right now. I had to put on a light sweater today. Here's hoping there's no canicule this summer, because we, like most people here, have no a/c. Be glad you at least have a refuge indoors in Austin! Like you, I don't do HOT weather. It makes me extremely crabby.

Sending cool thoughts your way,

Karen

La Belette Rouge said...

Karen: 66 degrees. Oh, that sounds so nice. I want to wear a sweater again without having the air conditioner on. And, yes, the heat makes me crabby, prickly and all together unpleasant and increasingly more unattractive.
And, as you sent the cooling wishes my a.c. just went on. Thanks!:-)

I know, I know. I've lived in Austin most of my life and I still fear the summer heat. I think summer here is like winter in a colder climate. People stay inside as much as possible. Instead of running outdoors to enjoy the first warm day of Spring, we eagerly wait for the first cool day of Fall. Which, honestly, will probably not happen until early November. Instead of oppressive winters, we have oppressive summers.

Tara

La Belette Rouge said...

Tara: I admire your endurance. I don't know how you have done it. Our timing in coming to Texas is not the best. We left Chicago at the end of a very long hard winter and then just three months into Austin we got the scorching heat of summer--that is not going to end until November. Yikes! This is another reason I am so happy we are going to France, where it is 66 degrees.:-) Stay cool, Tara!

We had a six week period over christmas where it was way over 100 degrees everyday and impossible to go outside. It was awful, nothing puts me in a bad mood like the heat. Its also nice to be ready to leave a place, you have no regrets when you go (except maybe not getting to slap he-weasels horrid boss)

alisa said...

I love the heat...but it has to be a dry heat and you have to have a pool...I grew up in Michigan, hot and sticky in the summer - yuck. I lived in Vegas for 1 year (about 8 years ago) and one night it was 110 at 11:00 pm - we couldn't believe it. We went from our air conditioned house to our air conditioned car to the air conditioned grocery store. Not fun.

I love Oregon and Washington but I'm not sure I could deal with the rain.

We don't have air conditioning here in Los Angeles, we live 1 mile from the ocean and the marine layer rolls in about 7pm and cools us off real nice! But I don't like the May gray and june gloom...I like blue sunny skies.

Spider bite....a new one every morning....yikes!

Cassoulet Cafe said...

Ok, maybe it's cuz I'm Greek, or from SoCal, or that I live in Oregon now and hate rain....BUT I LOVE THE HEAT!!!!
But I think maybe it's not so much the heat, but the humidity that's killing you in Texas??? Hubby is from Georgia and he's told me how dreadful it is. Of course, Toulouse is VERY hot and humid in summer, but I still loved it. Well, ok, to a point. France does not believe in climatisation...in English AC.
As for your zits, as you know I'm a 30 something gal with breakouts like a teenie bopper. I am about to do a post on the Phytomer blemish stuff I've been using and I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!!!!
You can buy it online at Exhalefaceandbodyspa.com
I promise, you'll be zit free by morning.

Last week we had days (and evenings) of upper 90s. This week it is mid 60s and raining.

I really dislike hot weather. Give me rain any day.

La Belette Rouge said...

Cybil: 100 Degrees over Christmas. Oh, Cybil. Poor Santa must have been melting all his candy canes. I hope you have a pool and good a.c.

It will feel really good to leave here. And, nothing against Austin. But, this town is not our home and is loaded with bad associations. Ciao, Austin!;-)

Alisa: We were in Chicago for two summers and I found the summers much worse than our time in Vegas(we also did a year there) and MUCH worse than L.A.

We lived very near the ocean in L.A.---less than a mile. I wonder if we were neighbors.;-) I really like the June gloom--but I am originally from Seattle so the gloom feels like home to me.

Yes, my legs seem to be an all you can eat spider buffet. It is getting so bad that I really shouldn't wear a skirt. But, I am too hot to be vane.:-)

Corfu Cousin: I think it's cause your Greek. He-weasel is exactly the same way. I tried to get him to move to Seattle at some point and he wouldn't do it. But, he does love Oregon. I do think it is the humidity that makes it so miserable. Steamy heat.

And,once again you saved me! I am off to order the Phytomer blemish stuff. I got two more zits today. I have never-ever-ever broken out like this before.

Kristen: It just seems wrong to me that it should be that hot in Oregon. 60's are much more like it!!

Randal Graves said...

Excellent point about the breeze. Plus, if it's extra hot, I can go jump in the lake that isn't all that far from my house. ;-)

I second b. Very hard to be creative when it's that hot. Sweat makes the ink run, and then you just get crabby. Not the good kind of crabby you can channel into writing, but the 'aw fuck it, turn the fan on high and what's on teevee' kind of crabby.

100° at Xmas? Isn't that breaking some kind of law?

Iheartfashion said...

Heat and zits and spiders, oh my!
But the weather in Paris will be perfect when you get there, and that's great news about Inkey. I'm interested to hear how he fares.

La Belette Rouge said...

Randal:Oh, how I miss Lake Michigan. It is much better at fooling me that I have a bit of Ocean. The Colorado is nice--but ain't an ocean.

And, yes, my brain is about cooked. I don't feel like I have a creative thought in days. I am going to ice my brain tonight and see if it helps.;-)

I heart fashion: It is not a pretty picture. Is it? Tonight I am sleeping with anti-spider spray on. I hope it works. My legs are turning into a topographical map of bumps and bites.
And, I will absolutely report on how the Inkey test run goes. Wish us luck.:-)

lbr - where in la did you live....we live in Mar Vista, right next to Marina Del Rey....how long ago did you live here?

Oh those mid-west summers...hell!
Vegas - I actually loved it there, we had a great house out by red rocks and we rock climbed every day and I ran and it was sunny and blue skies every morning..Bruce couldn't deal with the horrible heat and the strange neighbors and the old ladies in the grocery store with their carts full of food at the slot machines...very strange place to live.

I really have to be wet in the summer to stand it here, and I am a tropical person. I can even balance shit on my head in the event there needs to be water carried, but still it is very hot here.

Deep Eddy is a spring fed pool where I love to go to cool off. There is no way to go in there or Barton Springs without feeling much more sane. If you want to be cold and wear a sweater, Barton Springs has a free swim after 9 PM every night and it is freezing, but exhilarating.

I hear ya. It's been in the mid to high 90s here each day this week. Plus a hot wind is blowing. The poor plants droop all day and then spring back after dark.

For some reason hot seems hotter than it used to. Thank goodness for whoever invented AC

7. The brand I bought for transporting my pups is Sherpa. Not a fortune, has sides you can roll up and mesh windows.

9. Kiehls Blue Herbal Spot Treatment. Best zit remedy ever!

Good luck with the ongoing visa process. I've got fingers and toes crossed for you.

And the thing is, it's been a pretty cool spring, for what that's worth. I dread this time of year, too, although not because of the heat (which I rather like) but because of the sub-arctic air conditioning found everywhere. It's a drag to be required to remember a cardigan every time you go out between May & October. I spend more time shivering in the summer than in the winter, by far. Given time, I think a person can acclimate to the heat, although I understand some folks just never like it. OTOH, it's all relative -- I've had my British friends moan to me about the unbearable heat when it was 85ยบ. Which makes me laugh and laugh and laugh...

I also have a Sherpa soft carrier for my Shine, I found it at PetSmart (you can order them online, probably, if you don't want to go out). God news about the Inks.

The Seeker said...

Well... we must pay attention to the signs.

Luv

La Belette Rouge said...

Seeker: Yes, when we are given signs it we have to heed them.:-)

Alisa: We lived in the South Bay. It is extraordinary all that we have in common. Midwest, L.A. beaches, and Vegas. In Vegas we lived at the end of Sahara near Redrocks. However, they have long since expanded past where we lived. And, yes, He-weasel used to play the nickel slots when we went to the movies at the Gold Coast. Don't know if it is still there.

Freida Bee: Thanks for all the tips on cooling off. Before we leave Austin we will have to go for a dip. After 9p.m. I think I could manage to get out of the house for a swim. It actually sounds really refreshing. By 9:00 it should be down to the mid 80's.

P.O.P.: I cannot imagine how people lived here before the invention of A/C. I need to know the name of the person who invented it....just a second. The man we have to thank is Willis Haviland Carrier. Thanks, Bill.

Deja Pseu: I am not sure why, my zits seem to be immune to the Kiehls. I am hoping they are more responsive the the Phytomer that Cassoulet recommended.

And, thanks so much for the Sherpa recommendation.

I thank you for your continued well wishes. But, DP, would you mind crossing your eyes, arms and legs too?;-)

Style Spy: I don't know how you do it. I admire your ability to endure these summers. And, really, it is so hot here that I am not the least bit bothered by the extreme A/C. Like your British friends, to me 85 is way too hot. I know, I am a wimp.;-) But, I can take 20 below zero. That has to count for something.

Great tip on the Sherpa carrier. I am off to order it. Thanks,SS!
